Review of Blow Out (1981) by Joey K — 14 Sep 2007
One of DePalma's lesser known but best thrillers. As always there is a strong homage to Hitchcock, and also in this case a nod to Antonion's 'Blow up' (both in title and plot). Instead of a photographer unwittingly capturing a murder, we have Travolta's sound recordist do the same.
It has all the classic DePalma elements - stunning camera work and genuinely surprising twists - but is leaner and tauter than much of the more overblown excesses that would follow it.
