Review of Blow (2001) by Lucas Y — 28 Aug 2013
Romantic, intense, powerful and passionate. You can basically watch Blow a million times and not get sick of it, as opposed to doing blow a million times. You'd probably die. Johnny Depp makes any movie that much better simply with him being in it.
George Jung is such a great character. The rest of the cast is far out. Gotta love Paul Reubens displaying his acting versatility as Derek Foreal. Penelope Cruz is only in half the movie, but she nails every scene she's in and is incredibly sultry.
She makes you completely forget out Franka Potente, another great actress. The whole soundtrack to Blow is fantastic from the very beginning with that fat Rolling Stones rift and it never lets up. My only complaint about this movie is the last half hour which I felt could have been done better.
It loses its intensity terribly. Still a great movie though and you can definitely tell Ted Demme poured his entire heart into it. And again, like I said in my Notorious review, you never know what's gospel and what's not when it comes to these life stories.
People have told me the book Blow is a lot different than the movie. George Jung was more of a dirt bag and not the Cry Baby heart throb Johnny Depp we all grin over. Definitely one of the saddest endings of any film that comes to mind.
