Review of Bloom (2004) by Brent L — 19 Jan 2008
Eh. Walsh left out everything that gave the book its substance. He basically placed the camera in Thursday June 16 1904 Dublin and filmed what was to all others an ordinary day. Without Joyce's techniques and use of motifs, the plot cannot stand on its own. For example: the Odyssean parallels are entirely missing.
I still believe a good Ulysses adaptation can be made, but the plot must be subordinate to the technique and underlying allusions.
Rea was dead on as Bloom though.
