Review of BloodRayne (2005) by John T — 01 Aug 2008
Finally, my introduction to the auteur that is Uwe Boll, apparently this century's Ed Wood in the making.
Well, I'm a bit underwhelmed. Sure, the film is bland. Sure, the action sequences would make even the choreographers of Buffy shudder in embarrassment. Sure, the editing is off, and the dialogue so schmalzy-bland that twelve year old fan fiction writers all around the world would not own up to having written it. Sure, the costumes are so cheap they look as if they come from a local corner shop (on the costume note - red trousers and black chaps? The combined effect would make any feminist critic blush...). And sure, the entire thing has a made-for-TV feel about it, from the bland cinematography, lighting, SFX, acting, and settings right to the colour palette, which feels uncorrected-mini-DV to me.
And yes, this film would probably not be out of place on Youtube, as the project of a bunch of amateurs trying digital cameras for the first time.
But it's just too bland to be truly horrifyingly bad. It's not bad enough to be funny. It's just meh.
