Review of Blood: The Last Vampire (2000) by David P — 17 Oct 2010
The first film on my long list of Anime recomendations. I have a lot of films to watch so lets get to it.
The story is about this girl called Saya, who yes you guessed it, is a vampire and the whole 45 mins is about her, desgised as a school girl, hunting demons on this school ground. Also, involved is this very annoying nurse, who's name I do not know and this other guy called Dave who helps her out in the film.
The main problem with this is the running time; 45 mins isn't enough time to establish character development. There are only a few characters but none of them leave an impression and the very little we know about them doesn't help us care about them.
The structure is straight forward and it just leads up to a big bloody battle; when I say bloody I mean bloody. I did say "Holy Shit" during one scene, but I'm sure there are more violent animes out there.
What bothered me the most about this film was the constant switch between English and Japanese. I would of prefered if the film was just in Japanese, mainly because the English voice acting, which was terrible; they sounded like robots and when they where ment to say something "emotional", they sounded the same as they did before. Really bad voice acting.
I heard that this film won awards for it's visual style and yeh, the visuals was a mix between hand drawn and CGI, it was quite good in places. In other places it looked rather messy and the dark style of the film didn't suit it well. Also, some of the characters models looked rather weird and I couldn't tell what they were or weather they were a boy or a girl. A mix of good and bad with the animations.
Overall; I know this review may sound less then a 40%, but I was quite entertained by it. I wish it was longer and I wish it was all in Japanese or keep the English parts, but for fucks sake get better people to voice them. A big disapointment this was.
4.3/10.
