Review of Blood Simple (1985) by Grant W — 12 Jul 2009
David Lynch's 'Lost Highway' sure does owe a lot to this film...
This, and the whole 'rural noir' idea in general, is such a powerful thing because, if done effectively (and this was), it makes you feel as if you're suffocating and trapped while existing in the most vast spaces. Texas, the countryside and the open highway are all expansive and unrestrictive things, yet a film like this makes them seem doomed, miniscule and isolating. And with that comes the most intense feeling of dread.
