Review of Blood Simple (1985) by Itamar K — 19 Nov 2009
Very solid film debut for the Coen brothers. I can't say that it's on the same level as Fargo and No Country for Old Men, but I would say it's an outstanding effort that measures up to any of the other movies they have done so far. Which is a pretty solid accomplishment. The film is more of a film noir with black humor.
I will say that that's not quite as well developed as the two movies I mentioned, but the Coens get outstanding performances from the entire cast and they show off good potential here. It's a fairly simple story about lies, murder and deceit. It might be one of the Coens lesser complex films, but it's still a great watch.
If you get the chance you should watch this and then No Country for Old Men to see just how far these guys have came. They're easily top 10 filmmakers today, IMO.
