Review of Blood Simple (1985) by Simon P — 13 Feb 2013
This dark, lingering exercise in film noir marked the film-making debut of the Coen Brothers. It's a story of double-crosses, murder, and deceit characterized by the skillful actors and sharp editing and camerawork.
Marty (Dan Hedaya), is a bar owner whose wife, Abby (Frances McDormand), is cheating on him with one of Marty's workers, Ray (John Getz). A private detective named Visser is hired by Marty to kill Abby and Ray, but the detective soon complicates the matter.
A haunting score helps to heighten the suspense and bolster the chilling atmosphere. Blood Simple shows where the directors' style is based and leads the way for that style to exhibit itself in their future works.
