Review of Blood Simple (1985) by Leandro C — 05 Dec 2009
Well, dearies, I recently tried to rewatch this, but it didn't hold up. Back in my 20s, I loved this movie. This time around, I was bored after about 30 minutes, didn't care about the characters, and found the treatment of them condescending.
There's certainly the traditional Coen Bros strengths. It's well-written, there's amazing (and fun) camera work and editing, and the plot is unpredictable-- Noir turned on its head.
I think I became too common--I had kids and I can no longer tolerate how dark and clever this flick is. It was too focused on showing the greed and stupidity of its characters and I actually got pissed off. On the other hand, it's nice to have someone write a female character with true grit and intelligence. Now I hope I still love "Raising Arizona.".
