Review of Blood Simple (1985) by A K — 09 Dec 2009
Blood Simple has been in my ?To See? list for the longest time. A few days ago I got the DVD, and decided to watch it. I was not disappointed.
In the beginning, the plot is very straight forward; Marty hires a private investigator, Visser, to kill his wife and her lover after he finds out about their affair. However, Blood Simple delivers so much emotion and suspense, that at the end of the movie, it doesn?t seem so simple after all. The plot thickens when Visser delivers doctored photos of the 'dead' Abby and Ray to Marty, and murders Marty instead.
A combination of great acting, especially from the private investigator Visser (M. Emmet Walsh), fantastical shots, and very appropriate and ominous music, makes this movie a pleasure to watch. It contains some amazing shots, my favorite being the beginning when Abby and Ray are in the car, the backs of their heads facing the viewer, and the pouring rain outside.
Honestly, I could not find a single thing wrong with this movie. The plot is strong, and so is the writing. I was surprised to see that this was the Coen brothers? first movie. In my opinion, it is their best.
