A beautifully made film exposing the violent conflict for diamonds in Africa perpetrated by the white man. Hounsou and Dicaprio shine in their respective roles and offer an award-worthy and emotionally moving performance.

My favourite scene is Hounsou embracing his family as Michael Sheen in the background inspects the diamond in the light of an overhead bulb highlighting the differences between the two people and summarizing the entire film in one scene.

Set against the picturesque bacdrop of Africa, a country so visually striking yet ravaged by war, it sheds light on the cruelty and greed of men with no discernible moral compass. Jennifer Connely's special performance holds the entire movie together and represents man's salvation and hope, a refreshing character who's fine performance elevates this movie to another level altogether.

The screen play may fail but the script or lack therof is completely overshadowed by brilliant performances and remarkable direction.
