Review of Blood and Bone (2009) by Jourdan C — 20 Sep 2009
Whoa, I expected some eighties style throwback, what I didn't expect was a film that fully embraces the 80's throwback idea, to the point it's practically taking the mick out of itself. This is classic formula stuff giving the central character played by Michael Jai White no more than a "Caine from kung Fu" concept complete with sunrise walk in, and sunset walk out shot.
It's cheesy as hell, but there's a real love for exploitation, lo-fi video movies that's clearly evident, and from the look of the supporting roster White clearly also has the love of the cage fighting elite. Kimbo Slice, Bob Sapp, Gina Carano, Ernest Miller, all put in great appearances, and with good reason. The film is really passionate about bringing some realistic choreography to american action cinema again, and the set pieces, are broken down both visually and tactically giving you insight into how how truly great a fighter White is portraying.
It's direct to DVD,, but Blood and Bone has real heart for straight genre fare, so if you like your action hard hitting with clean , identifiable (if stereotypical) characters then this will really surprise.
Plus , Julian Sands as terribly evil english bad guy! result!
Sequel please, Bone is too much fun not too make more badass appearances.
