Review of Blockers (2018) by Mmadnessgames — 30 Dec 2018
Leslie Mann is annoying. Cena is okay, but he's another weak big man for everyone to laugh at. He cries. He's stupid and weak, but he has big muscles. They've been doing this since Junior and Kindergarten Cop with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Audiences gobble it up when you have a big muscly guy making himself look like a confused little boy. I'm getting a bit tired of it.
Mann's character had no real embarrassing moments. Whereas Cena had things shoved up his ass, stared into a man's eyes as he ejaculated, was forced to molest another man, etc.
That's another thing that annoys me. Why are straight guys so frequently forced to do gay stuff in Hollywood films? It's getting a bit old.
The girls aren't particularly likeable or memorable. One of them (the half Indian girl) acts like a man. The blonde is a typically giggling ditsy bimbo... the lesbian is a decent character, but the scene where she "tries out sex" with a man (who is completely incompetent in bed) and then laughs after he prematurely ejaculates... It's yet another pathetic male.
There are lots of pathetic males in this film. The deadbeat dad, the muscly idiot that gets sodomised, the fat kid with zero sex appeal, the Asian dancer guy. Where are the pathetic women?
This was billed as the female version of Superbad. It was supposed to be a film about women getting laid. But, two of the main characters are pathetic men... and pretty much all of the comedy comes from mocking men (rather than women).
So, films were guys get laid make guys look like idiots... and the first comedy film about teenage girls getting laid also makes guys look like idiots?
Apparently, adults are idiots too. The parents are mentally retarded in this film.
Ike Barinholtz is the only reason I watched it till the end. The scene when his daughter comes out to him was funnier than anything else in the film.
I don't think sodomy is funny. It doesn't shock me. Neither does an exposed penis or a bum. I don't care. I just don't think it qualifies as a joke.
This film could have been a lot better if it was directed better. I suspected it was directed by a woman, watching it... It doesn't surprise me that this was her first attempt at directing a film. A lot of the jokes fall flat. There is no subtlety to the delivery. Some of the scenes could have been a lot funnier than they were... But, a lot of that also comes down to Leslie Mann and John Cena.
Cena is okay in the role, but it's one of his worst performances... and they're overusing him in Hollywood. Sometimes he's perfect. Like in Trainwreck. But, here, he looks like a wrestler in a dad costume. I don't find his character remotely believable.
Mann's character could have been better if they cast someone with real acting ability. She's incapable of portraying dramatic moments and not great at comedy either... The only reason she still gets roles like this is because her husband cast her in all of his films and because he's powerful in the industry. (The film is produced by Seth Rogen and Apatow is credited in Special Thanks.
