The reviewer on the DVD box pretty much nailed this film with the right definition - part neo-realist, part noir. A charcoal-hued variation on the grifter tale - here told in Northern China in a myriad of poverty-stricken towns and mine-fields.

Shows the crude end of 'globalization' that has these characters seeking a rich life and happiness that the Western world perpetrates. Fine performances, all done by amateurs. And to keep with his documentary background, director Yang Li, avoids stylized shots, any music whatsoever, and applies no extraneous angles and/or edits to ratchet up the tension.
