Review of Blind Fury (1989) by Eleanora B — 09 Mar 2018
Rutger Hauer stars as a Vietnam vet who is blinded in the war and M.I.A., assumed dead. He is taken in by villagers who teach him how to use his other, now enhanced senses to compensate for his lack of sight.
They also teach him to cut people up with a sword hidden in his cane. Hauer returns to the States and looks up his buddy Terry O'Quinn. O'Quinn is a chemist in to the mob for gambling losses and they want to use him to make designer drugs.
When he balks, they show up at his home to kidnap his family. Unfortunately for them, Hauer happens to be there and he rescues O'Quinn's son. The two of them go on the road to find O'Quinn.
This is clearly an American version of the Zatoichi film series. While it's nowhere near their league, it's not bad, and wisely does not take itself very seriously at all. Hauer does mug a little too much, but he's basically a solid lead and Randall "Tex" Cobb and Sho Kusugi make for good villains.
