Review of Blind Chance (1987) by Matthew L — 14 Jul 2008
A fatalistic and simplistic film about a doomed young man's constant search for God and unsatisfactory substitutes. Irritatingly Kieslowski denies the audience the possibility of a meaningful third story [the one where God or "the party" are absent] or the possibility of human fulfillment if one avoids idolatry.
And so one is only left with what might be a boring nihilism. The sophistication, as it is with Kieslowski, is in the filmmaking instead of the content of the film itself. Difficult to not only dismiss and but also to accept at face value.
One of those films where a verdict takes a while to arrive. Too silly to accept yet too pretty to deny.
