Review of Blazing Saddles (1974) by Jon L — 31 May 2010
The best thing about this film - a top ten pick on the AFI's hundred funniest movies of all time - is that it takes political correctness and throws it completely out the window. Simply put, you could NOT get away with doing this movie today.
There's very little in the way of a story. It's a Western parody with a sitcom situation (black sheriff rides into town), but what we get here is Mel Brooks at the absolute height of his satirical and comedic powers.
Cleavon Little and Gene Wilder have fantastic chemistry as the lead gunslingers, and the supporting cast is just as memorable. Harvey Korman's corrupt villain Hedley Lamarr is a masterful gem of lunacy.
