Review of Blazing Saddles (1974) by Kenneth L — 05 Jul 2010
A great comedy classic and one of the earliest examples of the spoof movie (of the sort that Austin Powers, Scary Movie, and Airplane! would be). It's also an early example of a movie that outright mocks racism.
Did you know that Richard Pryor helped write the screenplay? You can definitely tell which bits were his. Every single actor gives a hilarious over-the-top performance, except Gene Wilder, who's good but actually a bit subdued.
Madeline Kahn even got an Oscar nomination for playing seductress Lilli Von Shtupp. Cleavon Little does a great job as Bart, the black sheriff who manages to deal with his racist white citizens with aplomb and humor.
The movie is basically a long series of gags, the vast majority of which are great. I think Young Frankenstein is actually the better movie, but Blazing Saddles definitely has its own special place in movie history.
