Review of Blazing Saddles (1974) by Mitch W — 09 Jun 2011
Definitely raunchier than his other flicks (or at least of the ones I've seen), Blazing Saddles takes an unapologetic look at racism in the setting of an old Western movie. As a comedy, meh, it was ok.
I only laughed a couple of times. As a social commentary, I'm not sure if it was trying to be one or not, but I'll assume it was, and on that part it was all right. Definitely not one for the kids (yet I wonder how much they had to edit it to get put on the Country Music Channel) but I think it does an ok job.
One thing I noticed was that I often found myself bored as the pacing was slower than other films, and it really pulled me out of the film. Of course, it goes with the territory of being a Western movie.
I'm not sure if Blazing Saddles has held up as well as other Mel Brooks films, but it is still worthwhile.
