Review of Blazing Saddles (1974) by Danny S — 25 Apr 2010
My all time favorite comedy. Mel Brooks teams up with comedy legend Richard Pryor to write the script for one of the funniest films of all time with the driving theme behind the movie being racism. The language in this movie is so vulgar that it would be impossible to produce today, yet it is never off putting.
The movie was nominated for three Oscars and is in the top five of AMC's all time comedies. The cast is the norms of the Mel Brooks crew with Gene Wilder turning in a hilarious performance as the drunkard Billy the Kid.
Pryor was originally intended to play the lead; however his replacement, Cleavon Little, takes the role far beyond what anyone could have ever dreamed. This movie is the masterpiece work of one of the all time great comedy writers in American History.
Never watch it on cable television because the censors remove all of its linguistic greatness.
