Review of Blazing Saddles (1974) by Chillindylan G — 26 Feb 2015
"Blazing Saddles" was a fun movie with its comedy and action quickly building on each other. Mel knew just would and wouldn't be funny. For example, punching horses, third-wall breaks, and eventually just cowboys sitting around a campfire eating beans and farting.
The movie was VERY politically incorrect and that's why I loved it. It was offensive, but it did that well while keeping a steady plot. Take the "Postal" movie for example. "Postal" was just Uwe Boll (writer/director) doing what WAS offensive, but included very little story.
(Eventually "Postal" just came down to being about retarded Taliban and gunplay. Because apparently nothing's funnier than a suicide bomber saying goodbye to Twinkies before he goes boom.
I'm dead serious.) But Brooks on the other hand KNEW what would be offensive and gave it more of story and character development. Instead of "Postal" just being a guy whose name is never mentioned and his love interest that came out of nowhere, in "Blazing Saddles," Bart is given a character.
After his "owner" rescues the railroad cart he was on instead of Bart, ("That was close! We almost lost a profit!") Bart then whacks the "owner" in the back of the head with a shovel.
After the "owner" begs Hedley to execute Bart, Hedley gets the idea to have Bart be the sheriff. There's your back-story. It just remains perfectly funny from start to finish and includes a story that keeps you interested.
On my rating scale, I'd give it a 10 out of 10. (That means "Perfect.").
