Review of Blair Witch (2016) by Robby K — 15 Sep 2016

If you weren't a fan of the original Blair Witch Project film, you definitely won't like this one. As someone who found the first one decent, but not amazing I'm not affected by the nostalgia or mindless hate that some people will bring with them while watching this movie.

For a minute let's pretend that the original never existed. This movie has it's fair share of creepy moments including a final 10-15 minutes that relentlessly bombard you with tension and fright, and the acting is good for the most part with a couple of actors/actresses not withstanding.

.. but now let's remember the original exists, and you'll notice that it's essentially the same movie. The rocks, sticks, and other gimmicks from the original are still in this. Which would be fine, but they add nothing new.

They do actually add a little bit to the lore of the Blair Witch, but as far as the actual "events" in the movie nothing has changed,... outside of the last 10-15 minutes. Because it is a direct sequel (to hell with "Book of Shadows") it does lose a lot of praise for being too similar, but if this movie had come out first, with the original being brand new as a prequel.

I think that this film would be the one everyone seems to love, and the other one would be panned by critics. This film does use a lot of stupid, stupid jump-scares (false-scares if you will), which I have to say I'm very disappointed by coming from a usually outstanding horror director in Adam Wingard.

Although the movie has its faults I really don't believe there's a big difference between this, and the original. This just happened to be made second.
