Review of Blair Witch (2016) by Jeffrey O — 17 Sep 2016
Blair Witch does nothing to instill hope in the horror genre. While it is lazy that it follows the original for a few beats, the biggest issue I had were the "scare tactics". At least eight times (absolutely no exaggeration), they do the friend-jumps-in-front-of-the-camera "scare".
As if we wouldn't hear their footsteps and all of a sudden they're right in front of the camera, smacking it and yelling, "THANK GOD YOU'RE HERE". No one in real life ever does that.
It's one of the most obnoxious horror cliches and it's the main "scare" used in the movie. The one thing this sequel does that improves on the original is it actually shows the witch.
..for a few seconds. The actors aren't great, the dialogue even less so, and the characters are useless. Due to the limited witch screen-time, the ending doesn't make up for the first two-thirds where the viewers are nodding off from boredom.
It's a waste of time to see this movie and it's only an hour and a half. Where's Black Phillip when we need him?
