Review of Blair Witch (2016) by John M — 25 Sep 2016

I was a big fan of the original movie and felt that this movie was a pretty good sequel. It it worth seeing in my opinion and I am tired of reviewers who just seem to say that every movie that isn't perfect is garbage.

Pros: I liked the updated technology, with the GPS and the drone. It shows they take the threat seriously. It also shows the power of the witch and how they still ended back up right back where they started.

I also liked that they revealed a few new things without revealing too much. You get a dimly lit look at the witch. They went more in depth about the witch being able to make the days shorter and make time pass differently for the two locals. I noticed as well that the cabin was next to the same tree that they pointed at the start of the movie. I think they did this to show that the cabin just shows up randomly and isn't in one set place.

The last pro is the biggest one, I found it scary. I was a little freaked out the night after watching it.

Cons:

The lack of character development. The first one had 3 characters and really gave you a feel for their qualities as people, good and bad. It also did a much better job of showing the mental anguish of being trapped in the woods, starving and in fear for you life. The first group was so devastated by going around in circles, this group barely seemed to care. Also, the black guy didn't seem to believe that the woods were a threat at first, even though he saw the original found footage and he knows one of the original groups brother.

My biggest con is the reason for going in the woods. What are the chances that Heather would have survived from 20 years ago? Basically, the witch would have had to have kept her alive that long and if that were the case, she would be so messed up that you probably wouldn't want to find her. I think it would have made more sense to have some conspiracy theorists trying to prove the whole thing was fake.

Lastly, why would anyone go in that cabin for any reason?

Overall, it is worth seeing, a rehash of the first one but they tried to make a totally different movie with book of shadows and this was much better.
