Review of Blair Witch (2016) by Ian G — 31 Dec 2016
I am sure for new rockstar on the horror circuit Adam Wigard, he had his choice for new projects to do to further his coming in Hollywood, after the hits of Your Next and the V/H/S anthology series, but given his decision to tackle the long dormant Blair Witch series after 16 years especially after the much maligned sequel the Book of Shadows must have been daunting no matter the size of its influence on his young career.
That plus the gluten of found footage films as well that one thinks even in the horror community the genre has been bludgeoned to death and back, pun intended. And in this case it is relatively a thankless love letter to the original film, slightly updated tech for the kids going into the woods, one of them being the brother to the original lead in the first film wanting to go into the woods to achieve some sort of closure finally and bringing a new team with him to help assist.
Pranks and hi jinks ensue in the early parts of the adventure until the natural sleep deprivation begins to set in and the only new intriguing element is introduced being the playing on the time (nights become insanely long in addition to the bermuda triangle mojo happening on all of their GPS devices) until the final survivors land in the house were the original survivors bite the dust.
There are really no new jumps to be had outside of the resolution looking a little more polished due to the higher digital grain in use. I get why filmmakers would love to go back and pay tribute to previous landmarks within the genre they have started their career in but unless they have something totally new to say in it sort of defeats the reasoning.
Am sure he will bounce back nicely despite the lost time.
