Can't believe it's been 17 years since the first one. I must say, I'm disappointed. The movie starts out by James organized a group of friends to look for his sister, Heather. But it's been so many years ago! Just think the age difference between Heather and James! He probably never even met her! I'd rather rewrite the story about a paranormal investigation team, investigating the area with people specialized in history, fraud, geology, and religions.
And then, there are the equipment. James' group now got fancier like drone, GPS tracker. However, it's a miss not to bring night vision goggle, thermo imaging, battery free flash light. With those, the movie can still be scary instead of just old school flashlight's point of view.
I was hoping to see vague image of Blair Witch but instead, something else. Since the movie is taking this direction, I'd suggest next sequel should be about government cover up since Lane mention how the town Blair got disappeared, strange phenomenon after, and no trespass sign in the movie. Pretty much scientific time and space. Unless they want sequel in the direction of exorcism.
Bottom line, Blair Witch 2016 feels like a remake of Blair Witch Project with extension afterward. D grade.
