Review of Blair Witch (2016) by Neeeck T — 17 Sep 2016
I find I tend to be easier on horror films that I am any other genre. I really did want to like this movie which people originally knew as "The Woods" until it was revealed to be a Blair Witch sequel.
It is a direct sequel to the original film, omitting the much, much worse original sequel quasi-sequel from 2000. Yet, it does what a lot of long after the fact sequels do and basically beat for beat re-tell the original.
Most of the original action sequences are here but the technology they use is updated and there is, due to a budget, more gore and special effects.
Yet, it has no scares for me. It relies almost 100% on jump scares and when that is your only bag of tricks your film has real problems. There is no sense of dread to be found here. It takes to long getting going and none of that time spent adequately getting us to care about the characters either.
