Review of Blades of Glory (2007) by Jose M — 22 Dec 2012
If ice skating could not have gotten anymore wimpier than it already was, then I say you have just watched Blades of Glory. A funny film pairing John Heder (Napoleon Dynamite) and Will Ferrell (Anchorman), Blades of Glory works great as a comedy and as sports film.
Banned from singles competition after a fight, Chaz Michael Michaels (Ferrell) and Jim MacElroy (Heder) pair up for team competition after a loophole is discovered. Their coach (Craig T. Nelson) will train to work together and to not kill each other.
Yet, their comeback threatens champion team duo of the Waldenbergs played deliciously evil and creepy by Amy Poehler and Will Arnett. They sent their sister (Jenna Fischer) to infiltrate Michael and MacElroy.
Will Michaels and MacElroy succeed or kill each other before anyone could say cluck. Blades of Glory work perfectly as a spoof comedy and sports film. It may be predictable and formulaic, but it works really well thanks to the performances given Ferrell and Heder.
Not to mention, the sweetness to unlikely lovers have. Fischer is sexy and great. Nelson is pretty funny here, but it is when the duo competes for the first time that is really a riot. Getting pass the awkwardness the characters and audience have is what worked really great.
Not to mention the cartoonish villains Poehler and Arnett are also great as they are in borderline that makes us downright uncomfortable. Blades of Glory is funny and glorious and one of Will Ferrellâ(TM)s better efforts because he would then go and do Semi-Pro.
Muah, muah.
