Review of Blade Runner 2049 (2017) by Erik G — 21 Nov 2017
Denis Villeneuve has performed a miracle. He has made a sequel to what many modern movie buffs regard as among the best science fiction films ever made (or, if you're me, among the best FILMS ever made) and, somehow, made it 1) completely respectful of the original; 2) completely respectful of WHICHEVER VERSION of the original you uphold; 3) completely matching the tone, look, and SOUND of the original (with acceptable innovations, considering it is set 30 years later); and 4) completely ITS OWN FILM, as well.
This is no retread or reboot, but a genuine NEXT CHAPTER of the Blade Runner saga, one with clear ties to the source but establishing original characters, new settings, and wholly new thematic material.
Also, BR49 establishes a new standard for modern cinematography; undoubtedly, one of the most gorgeously shot films ever made and matched with exquisite special effects. BR49's assets aren't just technical, though, as the sights and sounds are matched well with its performances, which are universally excellent.
Ford's limited screen time may very well net him a Supporting Actor nomination; his performance is worth a win, perhaps the best of his autumn career. Blade Runner 2049 is an exceptional masterpiece that is the best thing the world of cinema has given us over the past two years.
