Review of Blade Runner 2049 (2017) by Gabriele C — 14 Apr 2018
"Blade Runner 2049" was one of my anticipated movies of 2017,namely because of the director's past work which I thought was great, my favorite cinematographer Roger Deakins as well as a talented cast.
I saw Ridley Scott's original version a few years back not really understanding what was going on, and I guess that's because it was around the time when I was watching movies just for fun without analyzing them in order to get the meaning.
Due to a strict schedule of mine , there was no time to see the original Blade Runner before seeing 2049, so I walked in only knowing minimal information from the first movie. This film taught me that more length isn't always better, especially when it's combined with a slow storyline.
The debut screening for 2049 was at 11 pm and since I was dying to see it I had no choice. There was a point around the first hour and a half where I slept until the very last scene, having realised that I lost important plot points.
So I left the theater disappointed, not finding it that satisfying, because from all the reviews I've read , being called "one of the best sequels ever" I was supposed to love this movie.
I felt like I was the only one who found the movie dull, but after a bit of research I found that a LOT of people had the similar issues that I had as well , that of being too long, slow , finding the romance part of Joi and K unintersting and not being faithful enough to it's predecessor.
However, there was something that kept me wanting to see the movie again , I didn't know what it was , I just wanted to experience this film and see if my opinion drastically changed after multiple viewings.
Having seen 2049 four times , I can say that the flaws that I had in my first viewing were slowly drifting away the more times I've seen it. I've come to the conclusion that this is a challenging movie that requires the audience member to see it twice or more times in order to like it, at least that's from my perspective.
