Review of Blade Runner 2049 (2017) by David R — 29 Nov 2017
Blade Runner 2049 picks up right where the original left off aesthetically and storytelling wise, but updated for the twenty first century. It expands the world naturally by taking K, the main character, to massive farm sites, a massive landfill area, and an irradiated & abandoned gambling district.
The movie's pace is slow, with points of action left sparse, but the soundtrack and cinematography keep you interested. The acting is superb, including by Ryan Gosling who had a bit of a reputation going into this movie as being the guy from Magic Mike.
If you're a fan of the previous Blade Runner this can be disconcerting going into the film - but Gosling proves that he's a dynamic and talented actor. Characters from the first film are brought back in the sequel, but it's done so in a natural way that doesn't feel like pandering - an issue that some returning franchises have had trouble with.
Overall, it exceeded my expectations that I had into it.
