Review of Blade Runner 2049 (2017) by Kimberly W — 07 Oct 2017
I've never been able to identify my favorite movie of all time until now. The sheer imagination is amazing. The panoramic views of LA, flying to Wallace Corp., Las Vegas - the colors, the contrast of colors - are truly wondrous. The CGI here is true artistry, not the cheap trick people have grown accustomed to. (On an aside, when K is street level, 2049 doesn't convey that ... dirtiness, seediness, smell, and heat that comes with overpopulation the way that Blade Runner did.) The music is similar, yet different - synthesized moving crests and valleys, but also bursts of noise. The score has that originality that Inception did.
Moral and ethical issues are many: some are easily identifiable, some are not. Some need to be fleshed out by contemplation and discussion - and this is a GOOD thing. It's also intensely emotional. The characters are rich and full, and the acting is outstanding. This is worthy of at least two screenings, watching it on a tv will absolutely not do.
