Review of Blade Runner 2049 (2017) by Vincent L — 10 Oct 2017
Let me start on a positive note, the movie looks incredible, in that respect it was a worthy sequel. The same goes for the music, it harkened back to the famous Vangelis score of the original, but still managed to add something to it of its own. Only the bombastc BOOOOOM that challenged my eardrums at too many times was rather annoying and not exactly original.
Ryan Gosling convinces as the Blade Runner 2.0, though it must be said that the part doesn't take much emotional depth to master or I missed something.
Not much is asked as well of Harrison Ford once again playing the world weary anti-hero he can do sleepwalking.
Ana de Armas is a joy (pun intended) to watch and she has a great on screen presence and steals Gosling's lightning everytime she comes on.
Sylvia Hoeks as the psycho cyborg and Gosling's intended nemesis has great physical presence, but the way her character looked I kept thinking about that cute female alien in Galaxy Quest somehow which was rather confusing seeing the type of stone cold executioner she is supposed to be.
Jared Leto was weird to watch; I thought he must have come form a Blade set, confusing it with Blade Runner, and forgot to take off the vampire eyes, very odd. Just another megalomeniac stock character.
Ok, so now the real achilles heal of this movie, the story, it's so simplistic and purpsefully convoluted, I can;t say more without spoiling it, but it was a huge let down to me. The "twist" at the end was very weak and didn't move, apart from the look on Harrison Ford's face that was subtle and there was actually a real acting moment.
In short, looks great, sounds great, fail on other parts.
I guess Villeneuve so much fell in love with the original, his first and foremost desire was to create a world worthy of it. In that he succeeded, once again thank you mister Deakins, but unfortunately he forgot to have a story worth telling.
