Review of Blade Runner 2049 (2017) by Mary Y — 04 Oct 2017
No spoilers review on Blade Runner 2049. This was a GREAT film. Not a 'movie', not a popcorn munching time waster, not a 'meh it's okay', a great film. You do not have to like sci-fi to like it, you do not have to enjoy complicated re watching on the original to really get the contextual concepts here. It is BEAUTIFUL to watch, elegantly shot and polished throughout the whole thing.
I truly hope this is the film that gets Roger Deakins his Oscar, because it is just gorgeously shot. If you love excellent cinematography, beautiful lines and well done composition, please go watch this film. It is breathtaking to watch, and not in a way that you go "Oh that's CGI".
The writing on this is thought provoking and pronounced. It actually feels like a full meal of a film, with real character development and no waste of time in any section. Everything is set properly and the pacing of it is fantastic. For almost 3 hours, one would think film pacing would be an issue, but not for this. I found myself at the very end having to let go of a breath I'd been holding that I didn't realize I'd been holding onto. The questions it invokes are very good and really set a kind of dialogue that should be part of what we all ask, 'What is it to be human?' and more importantly 'What should we as humans do to remain human?'.
