Review of Blade Runner 2049 (2017) by Papa D — 06 Oct 2017

As a massive fan of the originals Noir architecture and poignant questions left lingering about what it really is to be human, to say I was excited to hear a Sequel was on the way was an understatement.

After seeing it, I can say that, in my opinion, this is equal to, if not surpassing the original. It's subtly nods to the original, with discreet sound effects that make everything feel more organic.

Apart from the initial understanding given to us at the beginning, the following 2 hours will give you a gentle roller coaster ride of emotions, revelation and experiences. The pacing is excellent the emotion is real and action is tense. I found myself gripping my seat as often as I felt a lump in my throat.

The imagery is nothing short of masterful and the whole aesthetic of the film, though different is every scene helps us to see deeper into the Blade Runner universe, from the neon clad cities, to the vast scrapheaps, the sunset glow of an irradiated Las Vegas, the pristine architecture of Wallace's head quarters, and the final menace of the city's giant sea defences.

The movie could be stand alone in itself, but to really experience it, you need to know the original. And, like the original, it leaves you wanting more. It doesn't so much as answer some of the original mysteries, more like giving you a different point of view on the same themes.

Despite the low turnout at the cinema so far, there were only 20 people in my evening sitting, which I still do not understand, I can tell you that this is a movie worth watching. It left a profound effect on me which I still can't seem to comprehend, as if my life has changed...... oh, and the soundtrack, that beautiful soundtrack, as iconic as the originals.
