Review of Blade Runner 2049 (2017) by Tj R — 12 Dec 2018

In my opinion, this is literally one of the greatest science fiction movies ever produced. Unfortunately, very much like the original Blade Runner, I believe that it will be a number of years before this film is fully appreciated. And I will also concede that it is simply not for everyone. It is a long film clocking in at over 2 1/2 hours, is highly atmospheric and dialogue driven, and action sequences are few and far between. But if you are a fan of the original, and enjoy a thinking man's sci-fi, heavy with philosophical themes and weighty dialogue...you will absolutely love this movie.

Visually I have never seen anything else like it, except for maybe the original Blade Runner which didn't have the benefit of 21st century technology. The sound design and the simplistic yet captivating musical score tickled my ear buds in just the right way as the epic unfolded before my eyes. This film simply put me in a trance that almost brought me to tears by the end. Simply beautiful. Everyone will not get this type of reaction, but if you are a true cinema lover, it should tickle your fancies.

I was fully surprised by the narrative as well, which justifies the existence of this sequel, coming out a good 35 years after the original...something rare indeed.

This is a film that has truly stuck with me, and one that I will remember and rewatch many times in the years to come, very much like I have with the original Blade Runner. It isn't necessary whatsoever, but I highly recommend watching both Blade Runner films in a row, whether you have previously seen the original film or not.
