Review of Blade Runner 2049 (2017) by Rhea K — 05 Oct 2018
Where on earth do I start. I'm sure that many people on here must have received some secret drug before entering the cinema as this has got to be one of the biggest let downs this year. Every single scene is either a long meandering multi angled journey that in real life would take seconds, but in this takes at least ten minutes to show you how the scene looks from above, the side, the ground, the protagonist, the thing the protagonist is walking towards, the thing in the thing the protagonist is walking towards, a person who might be walking around watching the protagonist walking towards the thing in the thing he wants but really this person walking around watching isn't there at all, to then move to the protagonist holding the thing, turning the thing, studying the thing...or a close up of Ryan Gosling's face as he thinks, Hmmmmm, or gets annoyed, or gets sad, while randomly interspersed with other actors giving him cues to look confused or sad or....you get the point.
What seems to constitute good movie making now seemingly means making every scene as long as possible and only progressing a tiny proportion of the story while at the same time being as predictable as an ice cube on a hot plate. A script that spent much of the time in the darkness of mumble city which when it could be heard was no more than a repetition of a million movies before and to concerned with paying homage to the original.
If you loved it then good for you, but that this dull, unadventurous, tedious, and sedentary movie is standing out as such a great one in today's Hollywood speaks volumes for the mainstream movie industry in the west and the audiences that pay their hard earned money to watch it.
