Review of Blade Runner 2049 (2017) by Nitpicker . — 02 Mar 2018
A cop is on a mission to find a child that should not exist.
What I liked.
- Just the right amount of Harrison Ford.
- Big improvement over the original.
- Good performances by everyone.
- Ryan Gosling does a good enough job.
- Ana De Armas is adorable.
- The scenes with K and Joi is pure gold.
- Amazing atmosphere.
- Thought provoking.
- Visually beautiful.
Nitpicks.
- Batista is in the movie for 5 minutes.
- Batista's voice is like gravel and hard to understand at times.
- Leto doesn't do enough. He just talks and talks.
- Leto is your standard take over the world bad guy.
- It's maybe 15 to 30 minutes too long.
- A lot of long scenes that could be trimmed down.
It improves upon the original in every single way and it's one of the greatest sequels ever made. But, it's really two movies. An A.I. cop hunting down A.I. beings, and also his love relationship with another A.I. The first story is good but the relationship story is even better and should not be overlooked as a side story.
The movie made me sad at the death of Joi, which is great film-making considering she's not real. Or was she? Asking if Joi was real is kind of irrelevant though. If A.I. can satisfy emotional needs and mimic human behavior, then how is A.I. any different than a person? Because she's not real?
What is real? What is real enough for you? And does it matter? And would you even care?
I mean, aren't people already in love with their technology? No one can live without their phones. You carry the phone around with you wherever you go, constantly interact with it, and the phone literally sleeps in the bed next to you. Humans preferring the company of technology rather than other humans. We're living in that world now. It's already here. Imagine what is next to come.
