Review of Blade Runner 2049 (2017) by Richard S — 26 Apr 2018
I have never held the original Blade Runner movie in as high regard as others, I recognise it's a visionary and well written piece of science fiction and it's an entertaining film but it's never one I go back to on a regular basis.
In fact when I made the decision to watch 2049, I went back to watch the original Blade Runner because it had been at least 18 years since I had seen it. My main reason for watching the sequel is director Denis Villeneuve who directed one of my favourite sci-fi films from recent years, Arrival.
Villeneuve has visual flair for the universe first brought to the screen by Ridley Scott as the film looks amazing but it's the story that really appealed to me this time. It's set 30 years after the events of the original and this time Ryan Gosling is a Blade Runner working for the LAPD, tracking down and 'retiring' rogue replicants.
It's the discovery of a long buried secret that could change the world and bring down the Tyrell Corporation that brings him into contact with Rick Deckard played by Harrison Ford who has been living in isolation, not wanting to be found because of his connection to this secret.
