Review of Blade Runner (1982) by Movie M — 14 Oct 2017
Reviewed 10.5.17. I did not see this movie upon it's original release, but understand why it flopped at the time. I can also see why it has become a cult classic. 'Characterized by cynicism, fatalism, and moral ambiguity,' it literally matches the definition of 'noir.
' And in few time periods have such films been widely lauded, let alone the creative dead zone known as 1982. It's all about mood, pacing, and a killer design concept. Not exactly ingredients for box office success.
But for idiosyncratic cinephiles, it's a must see. Harrison Ford in his prime. Sean Young before the wheels came off. A charming and seductive Daryl Hannah launching her career. And Rutger Hauer in a role seemingly made for him.
It's pitch perfect. A meditation on mortality, human connection, and the future of mankind. Decades ahead of its time.
