Review of Blade (1998) by Dov D — 29 Jul 2013
Wesley Snipes portrays the comic book character Blade, a daywalking vampire hunter. This movie has received a lot of praise and a lot of criticism since its release in 1998. Most of the criticism is penned down by people who take this movie way too seriously. It's a comic book adaptation. Of course it's going to be over the top.
What makes this movie interesting is the combination of action and well-choreographed fighting sequences, good dialogue and a great performance by Wesley Snipes. While Kris Kristofferson (as Whistler) and Stephen Dorff (as badguy Frost) do a decent job, it sometimes seems like they take things too seriously. Moreso than Snipes, that's for sure.
The fight sequences breathe Matrix-avant-la-lettre, however the CGI special effects are seriously dated by now. The overall production value and slick action scenes combined with the ulta-cool title character make up for it. In the end, this movie is a cult classic for all the good reasons.
Pros: Blade! action sequences are an embryo of "Matrix" before "The Matrix".
Cons: CGI production looks dated from a 2013 point of view.
Verdict: See!
