Review of BlacKkKlansman (2018) by Eric L — 17 Oct 2018
Spike lee is heavy handed as always and makes a message, not a film. Every CHARACTER behaviors like an idiot drastically reducing any stakes, and the love story is entirely inorganic. The attempt to make this historical event as current as possible (they stopped just shy of having the Klan wear MAGA hats) is often painful.
Washington and Driver give nice performances and there is some worthwhile cultural commentary, but as a movie it is thoroughly unenjoyable and will be soon forgotten and hopefully Spike Lee follows suit.
