Review of BlacKkKlansman (2018) by William V — 24 Aug 2018
A number of fine individual performances, and especially so by John David Washington and Adam Driver, but in the end, this is much more of a "sociology for dummies" cartoon than a movie. The writers/director seem to be so afraid the typical audience member won't get the points they are trying to make that they literally and continuously club you over the head with each and every point.
I did appreciate the skillful crafting of the movie as 1970's "Shaft" style blacksploitation film, The use of Brother Bellafonte was both gratuitous and sad and his lack of on screen presence and stamina undermined the very powerful story he had to tell.
Could have done without the Charlottesville sequence at the end - would have been much more powerful to have simply had an onscreen dedication to the memory of Heather Heyer.
