Review of BlacKkKlansman (2018) by Harry O — 29 Aug 2018
This film is a rollercoaster ride of comedy, drama and poignant commentary on race relations in America.
Sleek and stylish, BlacKkKlansman is full of innovative shots and sharp scene transitions. Despite being set in the past, the film feels fresh and modern with plenty of shots that make the film very engaging.
The cast also bounce off each other spectacularly, the banter between the characters is hilarious and doesn't feel out of place on a Saturday night out with the boys. Instantly, we fall in love with Ron Stallworth, played to perfection by John David Washington, rooting for him all the way on his journey from budding rookie to local hero. The addition of Adam Driver is the icing on the proverbial cake.
However, this film is by far no comedy and it can be excruciating at times as the film does not shy away from showing us disturbing acts of discrimination throughout its runtime and the language on display is as strong as it gets.
The only problem that tarnishes BlacKkKlansman is that some scenes drag on past their time and it can make some parts tedious.
But at its core, BlacKkKlansman is a reminder to society that despite how far we have come, we are still far behind where we should be.
