Review of BlacKkKlansman (2018) by John M — 16 Aug 2018

For the film itself it is hard to review. Going into this I thought this was going to be a comedy. The way the ads made it seem it was going to be a fun time. This is a dark time. A huge learning experience for people that don't understand racism from the time of this films set time. Or this is a harsh reminder of what people of color and even women, albeit one more than the other, went through back in this time. With some pokes at our modern times. It goes from a sort of funny or witty scene, to a scene that makes my blood boil, or the blood leave my body. I understand that I am white, and this film is about the suffering of minorities manly the Jews and blacks at the hand of the KKK or the "organization" but holy sh** seeing 10+ actors in actual KKK set ups is scary. It was frightening to think of what those outfits actually mean. I get the same feeling when I see a genuine SS uniform. Those two give me chills for what they represent. This film knows this and uses that to drive it`s plot. It can be confusing when it switches from comedy to drama, then it switches to show posters of old movies starring black actors and actresses from the past. There is a very strange beginning that doesn't pay off until the last 10 minutes. There is some action but really there is more of a thriller sense throughout the film. So, it`s good, but it's a very niche film. If you like spike lee films or thrillers or maybe like historical pieces, then this is your film.

Spoiler zone. The last five minutes of the film is actual footage from the Charlottesville riots of last year including the actual showing of the girl who lost her life. Spike Lee pays homage to her and the cause of the people who were mistreated at the event. Using footage of the attack, the melee, and President Trump. No hero dies. Only the three worst clansman die. Our hero still is disrespected at the end, but all in all no shocking twists happen anywhere in the film. It has barely made more than its 15-million-dollar budget. We shall see where this goes from here.
