Review of BlacKkKlansman (2018) by Eric R — 11 Aug 2018
4/5 Stars.
This is a tricky movie to review. The overall subject of the movie is really important. At a macro level, it is a history of white supremacy from the early 1900s and The Birth of a Nation up til now. There are some extremely powerful moments in the movie including the ending and the portion with Harry Belafonte. For these reasons you should definitely go see it.
But the execution is questionable at time. The movie comes across a bit campy. Topher Grace's David Duke and several of the Klansmen are so over the time satirical that it makes it hard to take things seriously.. And in some sections the directorial style distracts from the movie.
The end of the movie really pulls it all together. After the movie I read an interview with the real Ron Stallworth and it seems like most of the movie is very true to his story, despite how unbelievable the movie seems at times.
The performance by Laura Harrier was particularly strong. She reminded me a ton of a young Lisa Bonet.
