At 71 years old I lived through the turbulent 1970s witnessing Vietnam, Klan psycopathy, Stokley Carmichael, Seale, Newton etc. George Wallace too live and well. Spike Lee presents the film as pithy, poignant parody of the time. It is very very well done. He holds the audience for 2+ hours.

Had he left it there I'd have given him 4 stars!

Unfortunately Spike could not keep his personal political opinions out of the film. For instance, implying Woodrow Wilson was a bigot because the President viewed 'Birth Of a Nation" in the White House is a historic cheap shot. Indeed Wilson was raised on a slave plantation in the South, but he remains one of the most Liberal presidents. Also, placing Richard Nixon pictures on the wall of a Klan meeting room is inaccurate. Nixon was many things but not a bigot.

Lastly, picturing an upside down American flag (a sign of distress, remember) is way over the top!

I'd love to engage a discussion on current immigration policy, if you'd listen? Comparing current policy to the Klan is also way over the top!

Keep making good movies Spike, just keep your political thoughts to yourself.

Therefore, you get only 2 stars.
