Some of the money spent on consultants to make the tech realistic (although almost nonexistent) would have been better spent hiring some literature professors to advise on actually constructing a plot.
Once the plot actually enters the film, somewhere around an hour and a half in, it's not that bad. But for that first hour and a half the viewer is left largely wondering why we should even care.
