Review of Blackhat (2015) by Jon C — 27 Jan 2015
Michael Mann...did you lose a bet? You're the whole reason I saw this movie. And hey, it wasn't a bad FILM. But that ridiculous script? Seriously? SERIOUSLY?
***SPOILER ALERT***.
OK. Here's what goes on. The "blackhat" (that means "bad hacker", in case you were wondering) needs to test his ability to destroy a water pump. So, instead of just finding some innocuous water pump that no one would notice if it failed, he...wait for it...destroys a Chinese nuclear reactor. Let's not dwell on (or even think about) the fact that the system that controls the water pumps in the cooling system of a NUCLEAR REACTOR IN CHINA would in all likelihood be air-gapped. Oh, also, off-camera, the same attack is launched on UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REACTORS. So of course, the Chinese government and US government are all in a tizzy. A few days later, our genius hacker wrecks the Chicago Stock Exchange to manipulate soy prices and make a cool $76 million. I swear I'm not making this up. But the Master Stroke? Our baddie is going to sabotage the water pumps (that are diverting rivers from the mining sites) of five TIN MINING COMPANIES in Indonesia and then use his ill-gotten soy fortune to make BILLIONS on tin futures!!!
Why on earth would a mining company connect such an important system to the Internet? Don't bother thinking about that. Because Thor's solution is to simply...go to Indonesia and KILL all the bad guys. With sharpened screwdrivers.
I SWEAR I'm not making this up.
