Review of Blackfish (2013) by Ryan S — 25 Oct 2014
A documentary I'll likely not forget about what I would have otherwise considered a rather mundane subject. SeaWorld is a corporation of evil motherfuckers that deserve nothing less than to have its corporate executives thrown into the tanks to be torn apart limb by limb by these creatures.
Killing animals for food is one thing, but to kidnap these highly intelligent creatures from their extremely close-knit families, completely disregarding any impact that might have on them, and using techniques of food deprivation to get them to perform tricks for people is nothing short of sick and depraved.
Putting them in tiny tanks and allowing themselves to mutilate eachother, it's no wonder they only live a quarter of the lifespan they normally live in the wild. The portion of the film showing MRI scans showing that they have, in some ways, more highly developed brains than humans just adds insult to injury.
Until I see orcas kidnapping human children from their mothers, depriving them of food, and making them do tricks for their entire lives, I am completely convinced that these animals are more civilized than human beings.
